General
Information
Postgraduate training programs for clinical pharmacy
residents and fellows in Tennessee continues to be one
of the largest in the United States. By July 2006
approximately 1100 pharmacists have completed a
residency or fellowship in Tennessee. The majority of
programs offer PGY1 residency training.
However, Tennessee offers an extensive opportunity for
PGY2 residency training including pediatrics,
internal medicine, transplant/immunology,
drug information, ambulatory care, nutrition
support/critical care, oncology, pharmacy informatics,
and pharmacy management. The pharmacy
residency programs exist statewide in Memphis,
Nashville, Knoxville, Kingsport, Johnson City, and many smaller
communities within close proximity to these larger
cities.
The University of Tennessee
College of Pharmacy supports many events for
postdoctoral trainees within the state of Tennessee.
In the beginning of the training year, residents and
fellows come together for an annual symposium sponsored
by the College titled “A focus on Research Development
and Teaching Effectiveness.” In addition to the
excellent program, the symposium is a great way for the
new residents and fellows to network and meet clinical
pharmacy preceptors and other postdoctoral trainees
across the state. The traditional end to the training year
is the Annual Residency and Fellowship Training Banquet
held in June at The Racquet Club in Memphis where
postgraduate residency and fellowship training
certificates are awarded.
With the large number of postdoctoral training
positions in Tennessee, many preceptors from our
residency and fellowship programs will attend the ASHP
Midyear Clinical Meeting (MCM) in December to recruit
nationwide. Please be sure to stop by The University of
Tennessee College of Pharmacy Exhibit at the Residency
Showcase where you can meet with programs across the
state. We hope you will use this website for additional
information on the various residency and fellowship
programs found in Tennessee.
